Day of rail action

Today, Green Party activists are out protesting at the latest hike in rail fares and calling for the re-nationalisation of the First-Great-Western franchise.

We gathered to protest at Stroud station, only to be shooed off by staff. The land and buildings associated with railways, are owned by National Rail - ie the country. But apparently railway staff do not know the difference between franchise and ownership, which explains rather a lot. We protested in the carpark instead.

Due to a landslide at Stonehouse (heavy rain, climate change...) trains were cancelled, and Molly Scott Cato was last seen getting on a bus. We gather from her twitter feed @molly4Europe, that the bus driver does not know how to get to Swindon, much less where the train station is, so we can only hope she lands safely for the rest of today's protests.

In the meantime, there is an excellent blog here - http://stevehynd.com/2014/01/02/fair-fares-a-protest-in-stroud/ about why we need to take back the railway and a pettition at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/56244
