A while back I raised the issue of compulsory purshase of Tricorn House - this was in response to work I had been doing on Cainscross Parish Plan - it was overwhelmingly one of the most important things that could be tackled to improve the area. Time and time again in the interviews I was conducting for the Parish Plan this issue was raised unprompted.
Anyhow just to keep you up to date the Council have not ruled out the option of compulsory purshase but are waiting to see how the canal developments impact on the area - there are rapid changes occuring and despite this being a monstrosity at one of Stroud's key gateways it does not make sense to go down that route at this point. Apparently the building is on the market again for what many are saying is a ridiculously high price - its certainly a difficult corner site with no good access for vehicles - and it is ceratinly much in need of improvement.

Have the council considered using this site as a low rise multistorey carpark similar to the one built at the asda site in Gloucester. The footprint seems big enough to replace the spaces by the allotment site. Could this not then be used for affordable housing. This site is on level ground. close to shops and bus routes into stroud. Would not the sale of the land help cover the cost of tricorn. I assume that tricorn house is on some insurance companies books as an extortionatly priced asset
Re: above comment. One of the problems is access to the site by road but I suspect that could be got around. I will pass on your thoughts as it is an interesting idea. My immediate reservation would be that this is a gateway site into Stroud - a key building that dominates a key site - and replacing with a car park could be equally ugly. Having said that I've seen designs and photos of multi-storey car parks in Europe where they have built out from the outside of the building affordable flats - I don't suspect there would be room for such a move and a car park - but still could see such a move improving the car parks in Stroud? Better in terms of looks would be the affordable housing on the Tricorn site but it seems nobody is interested at the moment as it is on the market for too much - and doubt things will move until canal is underway more.
Looking at the building footprint I would not imagine more than a ground floor and one storey parking area. A significant reduction in height to the existing building. Surely access to the sight already exists. Would the traffic to the park be anymore significant to that which already crosses over to the existing park. I am imagining the new build houses to have significantly reduced access for the motor vehicles thus why I mentioned close proximity of co-opmand bus routes. I am unsure if the parking is designated for overnight HGV and some accomadation for access to the allotments will be needed. Effort is needed by the council to increase one/two bedroom type flats and reduce the need for car use. Perhaps a car sharing paln could be developed for the site.
Tricorn House site is surprisingly small. I don't like car park idea but agree need for more affordable and social housing.
